Chat GPT for College Admissions Essays?

Chat GPT is a technology that is advancing exponentially and teens are starting to catch on. A recent viral TikTok video shows a high school English teacher scolding the class because over half of them were caught using the artificial intelligence (AI) app to write papers for class.

As college consultants begin working with their juniors this spring to outline and brainstorm essays, we are working diligently to remind families of the ethical standards of writing essays for college admissions.

With this growing trend of using AI among youth, we turned to the AI app to ask its opinion: "Should students use Chat GPT for College Admissions Essays?" Below is the answer, written by Chat GPT. The answer comes as no surprise but does offer some valuable tips about why the college essay is a personal essay that must be written by humans for humans.

Written by Chat GPT:

When it comes to college applications, the essay is often one of the most important parts. It can be difficult and time-consuming to write a good essay that accurately reflects your personality and goals. Unfortunately, some students turn to chatbot technology as an easy solution for their application essays. However, using a chatbot to write your college application essay is not recommended.

Most colleges are looking for original content from applicants; they want to get a sense of who you are beyond what grades or test scores say about you. Chatbots cannot provide this kind of personal insight because they don't understand complex human emotions or experiences in depth. As such, any essay written by a chatbot will likely feel generic and lack creativity or individuality – two qualities that are highly valued by admissions counselors. Using a chatbot to write your college application essay could also lead to issues with plagiarism. Chatbots can be programmed to search the internet for material related to the topic, which means they may use existing content without properly citing it or giving credit where it’s due. This is not only unethical, but it’s also grounds for rejection from many colleges and universities. Finally, using a chatbot could put you at risk of missing out on important feedback and guidance from an experienced writing tutor or mentor who can help you craft an effective essay that stands out from the crowd. A human being will be able to provide personalized advice on how best to present yourself in your essay, as well as tips on how to make it more engaging and persuasive. Overall, while chatbot technology may seem like an easy solution for writing college application essays, it’s not recommended. Instead of relying on a machine to do the work for you, take the time to write your own essay – with help from a qualified tutor or mentor if necessary – so that admissions counselors get a true sense of who you are and what you can bring to their institution.
